What to Expect From Anxiety Counselling: The First Sessions

This content is for informational purposes only and does not constitute professional mental health advice, diagnosis, or treatment. If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, please contact the 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline at 9-8-8.

Anxiety counselling usually begins with a conversation about how anxiety shows up in your life, what sets it off, and what you want to be different, followed by a plan that gives you practical tools early on. You do not need to arrive with the right words or a diagnosis; working that out together is part of the first few sessions.

If you have been putting off booking because you are not sure what happens in the room, this is what the process typically looks like.

Before the First Session

Most people book after months, sometimes years, of trying to manage on their own. That is common, and it is not a reason to feel embarrassed.

When you book, you will usually fill in a short intake form and consent paperwork. It helps to jot down a few notes beforehand:

  • When anxiety tends to show up: mornings, before work, at night, in social situations
  • What it feels like in your body: racing heart, tight chest, stomach upset, poor sleep
  • What you have started avoiding because of it
  • What you would notice if things were a little better

You do not need to share everything at once. Bring what you are comfortable with.

What Happens in the First Few Sessions

Session one is mostly listening. Your counsellor asks about the anxiety itself, your history, sleep, work, relationships and anything else that is weighing on you. They will also explain confidentiality and how sessions work.

Sessions two and three build a shared picture. Together you map the pattern: the trigger, the anxious thought, the body response, and what you do next. Many people find that simply seeing the cycle laid out takes some of its power away.

Early skills come quickly. Grounding and breathing techniques, ways to catch an anxious thought before it spirals, and small steps toward something you have been avoiding. Many clients begin to notice a shift within the first few sessions as they practise these tools, while deeper change builds over weeks and months.

The Approaches Anxiety Counsellors Use

At The Counselling HUB, anxiety counselling draws on three evidence-based approaches, matched to you rather than applied by formula:

CBT has the strongest research base of the three. The U.S. National Institute of Mental Health describes CBT as “a research-supported type of psychotherapy” that “is commonly used to treat GAD,” and notes that it “has been well studied and is the ‘gold standard’ choice for psychotherapy” (NIMH).

How to Choose an Anxiety Counsellor

The fit between you and your counsellor matters as much as the method. A few questions worth asking before you book, or in the first session:

  1. Are you registered? In BC, look for a registered clinical counsellor (RCC) or a registered social worker (RSW). Registration means professional standards and a complaints process.
  2. Which approaches do you use for anxiety? A clear answer is a good sign. “It depends on the person” is fine if they can explain what it depends on.
  3. What does progress look like, and how will we know? Good counsellors check in on this regularly.
  4. In person, online, or both? Choose what you will actually keep showing up for.
  5. What are the fees, and can I claim them? Check our fees page and your extended health plan before the first session so cost is not a surprise.

Anxiety Counselling in Nanaimo and Online

We see clients in person at our office on Wentworth Street in Nanaimo and by secure video anywhere in British Columbia, which suits people in Ladysmith, Parksville, Duncan and Victoria who would rather not add a drive to an anxious week. Online counselling is not a second-best option: NIMH notes that psychotherapy “can be effective when delivered in person or virtually via telehealth.” Ontario residents can work with us virtually through our Ontario anxiety counselling service.

Anxiety is treatable. The goal is not to remove all anxiety, because some of it is normal and protective, but to turn the volume down so it stops making your decisions for you. If you are ready to talk it through, you can book a first session or reach out with questions through our anxiety counselling page.
